Summer Wrap-UP (already?!)

It has been a fun, albeit quick, summer!  It started out with some of the early summer days being extra breezy, and ending with some real light wind days.  But fun was had at every Community Boating Day we had this summer, and the goal of having fun while teaching people how to sail, increase water safety knowledge, and enjoy non-motorized boating in general, is being achieved!!!!

We are looking forward to our next Community Boating Day on Sunday, September 23rd!  Come on out and join us on the water!!!

Also, we have the call out for more VOLUNTEERS!!!  If you have an interest in either coming early, or staying late, to help on on boating days, or to help out behind the scenes in any way at all, please CLICK HERE to add your name to our volunteer list, and you'll receive more information shortly.  Thank you!

Here are a few pictures to enjoy from the boating day in August!  Looking forward to seeing everyone on September 23rd!!!

Summer has arrived!

The boating days for May and June have come and gone in a blink!  We had fun times out on the Day Sailers in May, with everyone getting to enjoy time on the water.  Mother Nature didn't think that was such a good idea for the June boating day.  With a large lightning storm headed toward the boat ramp at 2pm that Sunday, the decision was made to not even rig the boats.

We waited a while just to be sure, and it was definitely a good call.  The thunder started rolling, the skies opened (and lasted the rest of the afternoon), and we sighed....hoping the July boating day will allow for fun water time!

The next Community Boating Day is on July 1st, between 2p-4p at the boat ramp at Sandy Creek Park.   If you have your own non-motorized boat (ie. sailboat, kayak, canoe, etc.), you are more than welcome to bring it.  If not, you can go for a ride on one of the Day Sailers or Optis provided by CBA.  CBA is typically able to provide everyone with life jackets, but if you have your own, go ahead and bring it.  Looking forward to seeing you on the water!  Here's hoping for good weather and WIND!!!

There is also a General Meeting open to the public on Thursday, June 28th, 2012, at 7pm.  It will be held in the meeting room of the Sandy Creek Park clubhouse (just past the entrance guardhouse to the right).  Topics covered during this meeting will include the schedule and upcoming activities of CBA for the remainder of the year, such as community boating days and adult/youth sailing programs and workshops.

Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting, and then on the water at the next Community Boating Day!!!

Spring has Sprung!

CBA's Community Boating Day for April was a fun and blustery one!  It was windy enough to have a few whitecaps on Lake Chapman (wow!), but moderate enough to still head out safely.  We had the Highlander out, along with both American 14's, and even a few of the Opti's got some water time in.  Fun was had by all, and there were some fun stories back at the boat ramp afterward!

We welcomed lots of new members in April, and are looking forward to what the future months continue to hold for Community Boating of Athens!  Our date for May's Community Boating Day has been changed from May 13th (which turns out is Mother's Day...oops), to May 20th.  We're looking forward to seeing you on the water!!!

Here are some pictures from our fun on the water on April 22nd.  It was about as shifty as Georgia lake sailing gets, as evidenced by the bottom two pictures which were taken about 20 seconds apart from each other...note the sail positions.  Enjoy!  :)

CBA's First Blog Post!

Welcome to the first blog post for Community Boating of Athens (CBA)! We plan on utilizing this blog as a means to communicate the schedules and summaries of community boating days, beginner sailing trainings, and racing clinics for both adults and youth sailors (ages 8+).  If you aren't already on our email list for updates and schedules, be sure to fill out the subscribe form on the top right of this page for all the latest news!

January
We've wrapped up all the winter community sailing days for 2012, and are looking forward to the spring dates!  Believe it or not, January yielded the best and warmest weather with a great turnout.  The two 14' day sailers were full at all times and rotating going into the boat ramp dock and heading back out to make sure everyone got a trip on the boats.  Fun was had by all, and we're hoping to see all of the kids that were there back out in the CBA Opti's come spring and summer!

February
February's boating day was wet with fairly light wind, although there was just enough to get both day sailers out on the water.  The last 20-30 minutes of the day the wind made a showing with gusts of up to 10-15, which was just windy enough to make those of us on the water enjoy it at first, but then begin to freeze from being wet from the rain.  Brrr!  It WAS fun while it lasted!
February's Boating Day - Wet, but fun!

March
Too windy to sail?  Yep.  Unfortunately, that was the March boating day.  With gusts of 40+ the CBA day sailers never even made it to the boat ramp.  It was a learning experience for us though as we continue to grow as an organization, so it was a good day in the scheme of things.  For instance, in the future when weather prevents us from hitting the water, we'll have a back-up plan for teaching boating and water safety on land (and if it's winter when that happens...I'm going to suggest hot chocolate be on hand as well).  ;)  There was one sailboat that did make it on to the water independently.  Will and his friend Dave did launch their own Vanguard 15.  They were able to get some awesome screaming reaches in crossing the lake a handful of times before the weather forced them in (first into the water, and then the boat ramp).  I think they had a....err...memorable day.  :)  We hope to see them at future CBA events, where it's a little LESS windy.
Will with his own Vanguard 15, happy to be back at the ramp!

Our next Community Boating Day is on April 22nd (which happens to be Earth Day, and how Green is non-motorized boating?!!!).  :)  We'll have the two 14' day sailers back on the water, and we're hoping to have the six Opti's available for any interested youth sailors, including beginners, to take out who are at least 8 years of age (the Opti's are the smaller type of boat in the picture at the top of this page).

So mark your calendars for 2pm on April 22nd, and meet us at the boat ramp (not the beach) at Sandy Creek Park.  We're looking forward to seeing you on the water!
